Tigers section membership is open to male members with handicaps up to 12. A number of Tigers but by no means all, meet up every Saturday and Sunday morning to play in the Tigers roll up. The section runs 3 teams, Scratch, A team who play off scratch and the B team where play is in a four ball format with the lowest handicap allowed being 7. There is a Tigers Championship played over 36 holes and a Tigers Match-play knockout. At least 2 away days are organised locally, one in winter and one in summer, courses recently visited include Porters Park and Woburn. Ad hoc away days are informally organised by members of the weekend syndicate, with multiples of four balls taking advantage of Colt Reciprocals and the County Card to play a variety of courses within a 60 minute drive of Sudbury.
The Foxes are the largest section of men’s golfers in Sudbury Golf Club with over 100 members catering for the golfer with a handicap between 9 and 19 (inclusive). They run 13 internal competitions throughout the year and are affiliated to the Middlesex County Foxes Association (MCFA) where the section competes against other Middlesex clubs in MCFA organised competitions, including the prestigious Abrey Cup which Sudbury Foxes won this year (2017). In addition to internal club competitions and MCFA events, the section is also very active in organising friendly matches with other clubs in the county. This offers members the opportunity to play friendly golf at other clubs in 18 matches (at significantly reduced prices), while representing the club and section as part of a 10-12 man team from late Spring to early Autumn.
The Rabbits are the ‘High Handicap Section’ for players with a handicap of between 19 and 28. They play about 20 matches home and away against 12 other Middlesex clubs each year. Playing in three of these matches qualifies the section member to represent Sudbury in the prestigious Stanley West Trophy competition, a team knock out competition played between Middlesex clubs. They also offer an internal knock out competition, stableford competition days and an annual dinner.
The Seniors section (loosely for over 55’s and with no handicap limits) is a friendly and active group of members and they form the core attendees of the Balls Up roll-ups each Tuesday and Thursday. They are particularly keen on the sociable gathering in the bar afterwards. There are friendly home and away matches with senior sections from other Middlesex clubs and a team is entered each year into the very competitive Felmingham Trophy played for by around 32 Middlesex clubs. Internally the Seniors also compete for the Senior Skinner trophy, which is a knockout competition. There is an annual dinner in January every year which is very well attended.
The over 70’s section welcome people from their 69th birthday, there are no handicap limits. They meet over the summer months to play for six trophy’s and a home and away match against Harrow School. The trophy’s are played for over nine holes, although most members play the full eighteen, not least because buggies are available for hire. There are extra allowances the older you get. A light lunch together with a raffle and prize afterwards gives past members who just want a drink and bite to eat to join in the fun.
While much of the information on the website , relating to the use of our Clubhouse, bookings of tees, social play etc., applies equally to both men and ladies, the ladies form one cohesive group. Competitions are run both at weekends and midweek (usually on Tuesday mornings). There is a full programme of friendly matches against other clubs, again at weekends and mid-week. The ladies participate fully both in Middlesex county competitions and national ones. The Ladies run monthly Medal and Stableford competitions, as well as a variety of “fun” competitions. There are also knockout competitions, four in the summer and one in the winter. The Club runs a mixed knockout competition and there are often mixed events on bank holiday weekends.
